The Metal Detector

Most people have a particular image which springs to mind when they think of a metal detector. For example some see the image of a detectorist combing the beach in search of buried coins or treasure. To others the security walkthrough may be their only contact with a metal detector at the airport or courthouse.

We hope this guide will help you chose which machine will suit you for the job in hand, whatever your budget. We will start with the composition of the hobby detector and what all of the components and what they do.

Structure of a metal detector

  1. Search Coil. The part of the detector that senses the target. This is sometimes known as ‘search head’ ‘loop’ & ‘antenna’
  2. Stem. Connects the search coil to the control box. This part of the detector is often adjustable to suit your comfort level or for growing children.
  3. Control Box. Contains the circuitry controls, speaker, usually the batteries and the microprocessor. (Not always in the middle of the machine.
  4. Armrest. This is now standard on most detectors to help keep the unit steady as it is swept from side to side.
  5. Most detectors also have a headphone jack for connecting headphones.

So how does the metal detector work?

There are two main types of metal detector on the market at the moment. They are:

Transmit Receive (T.R). Also known as non motion machines.

These were first developed in the 1960’s. They need to be manually tuned and re-tuned every few minutes due to the signal drifting. This type of machine is normally less expensive but has the disadvantage of suffering from ground effect.

Motion machines.
A motion machine is a fully automatic ‘ground cancelling’ detector. In most cases you turn it on; it tunes itself and retains its optimum tuned state automatically because it is constantly re-tuning itself. You cannot stop moving the search coil over a target as it will tune out. The coil therefore has to be moving to be able to detect anything, hence the term motion machine. This movement is the swing from left to right and back which is your search swing.

All detectors are affected by the conductive minerals in the ground. TR machines suffer more than motion machines in this respect. The effect these minerals have varies from one piece of ground to the next, with no way of determining what is ‘clean ground’ (with little or no ground effect) or what is bad ground (highly mineralised).

To test this, on inland or above the high tide mark on a beach you would find negative ground and typically a TR machine would lose its sensitivity (depth) on this type of ground but a motion machine would perform at a greater depth. If you now walk down onto the wet sand below the high tide mark on the beach you would now have a positive ground effect. This is where the detector is giving a signal when it detects the salt water conductive sand the same as it would as if picking up metal.

If the TR machine has a discrimination control you can get rid of this effect by turning this up and rejecting the positive effect. If you are using a motion machine, you would turn the sensitivity control down to reduce any false signals.

Discrimination
Most metal detectors will allow you to discriminate between good targets and bad unwanted items. There is a safe level you can set all discriminating detectors to where you will reject most of the unwanted items but still find the good stuff.

Depth
Metal detectors are ideal for finding buried objects but the question most commonly asked is how deep they will detect? Unfortunately this is a question we cannot answer with any accuracy. The depth of a detector will depend on many aspects:

The type of metal detector
The technology used for detection is a major factor in the capability of the detector.

Size of the object
The larger the object you are detecting, the greater the depth it can be detected at. For example if we take a £1 coin certain detectors will pick it up at 6-7 inches in air. In the ground the distance will be less due to ground effect, which is arbitrary. If we now take a handful of £1 coins it could be up to 12 inches, a box full of coins around 18-24 inches, PC sized container full of coins 2-3 feet and a car at 4-5 feet.

The type of metal
Different metals have different conductivity and are easier or more difficult to pick up. For example gold & silver are good and stainless steel is poor.

How long has it been in the ground
If you bury a 2p piece in your back garden at 6 inches you probably wouldn't’t be able to pick it up. If it was left for 6 months for the soil to stabilise, the coin will now be in range. If left undisturbed the detection range will increase slightly as the metal leaches slightly into the surrounding soil.

Where to Buy a Metal Detector

There are a limited number of dedicated metal detector shops in the UK where you can go and buy a metal detector. The Regton Metal Detector shop in Birmingham is the largest of its kind in the UK. This is the best place to try out any potential detectors and see which one is the right one for you. As there are a number of detectors available on the market it is essential to get some un-biased advice on your purchase. At Regton we pride ourselves in giving you, the customer the right information to get your hobby off to the best possible start. Beginners Metal Detectors

Scanmaster Metal Detectors
For anyone starting out in metal detecting the main criteria for buying a metal detector is how much can I afford to spend. There are a bewildering amount of metal detectors on the market at a broad price range, from as little as £19.95 for a Scanmaster 1st up to over a thousand pounds for the Minelab Explorer. We would suggest that you spend no more than £129.00 on your first detector but if you're not sure if the hobby is for you a Scanmaster Silver will cost just £59.95. Our most popular detector for getting into the hobby is the Garrett Ace 150. This detector is a simple turn on and go machine which will keep its value if you decide to trade in for a more powerful detector. If you decide you're staying with the hobby then a further £50.00 will buy the Garrett Ace 250 for £179.00. Any detector over £100.00 purchased on our web site comes with a FREE next working day delivery. This means that any order where payment is received by us before 15.30 will be delivered on the next working day. (Saturday deliveries are available by arrangement).

Advanced Metal Detectors

Garrett GTI 2500
When you have established that metal detecting is the hobby for you, it may be time to upgrade to a more advanced metal detector. As the Norfolk Wolf states in his book, Advanced Detecting, "There is no best detector, if you want depth, then this will be at the expense of recovery speed and target separation". You need to know which detector will ideally suit you and your sites, rather than chopping and changing every time the manufacturers bring out a new model". If you are looking for a detector with a meter which gives you information before you dig then the Garrett GTI 2500 is the right choice. If it's a simple, well made detector with a fast recovery speed and the ability to find smaller, deeper targets, often in iron infested ground then look no further than the XP Goldmaxx Power. There are many other things to take into consideration when purchasing your advanced detector. If you need any advice or help choosing your detector then give us a call on 0121 359 2379 or email us for an ubiased opinion on any one of the many metal detectors on the market today.
